Sovereignty, Security and Learning: Round table discussion in Nepal
GalliGalli organized a round table discussion program on “Sovereignty, Security
and Learning” on 25th January 2020. The discussion was mainly focused on the
geopolitical position of Nepal and its crucial role to prevent sovereignty and security
through different forms of learning. As the country is sandwiched between two of
Asia’s competing powers and have been watched by Superpowers, the new advent
of technology, climate change and its increasing centrality in geopolitics would
impact on it’s security and sovereignty.
The program was conducted with renowned discussants like Dr. Dinesh Bhattarai, a
career foreign service officer served as Nepal’s Ambassador/ Permanent
Representative to the United Nations, General Rookmangud Katawal, former Army Chief, Sumana Shrestha and Management Consultant along with renowned experts. The active presence of senior journalists from government and private organizations had made the discussion program more effective. In the meantime, the participants had raised the issue of the education system and its importance from primary level to secondary level is required to mitigate the emerging threats and also to take advantage of emerging opportunities. The stimulating discussion had widely covered the issues of security and sovereignty from different spheres of life.
The participants from the round table event talked about how coming trends from technology, to climate change and Nepal’s increasingly centrality in geopolitics would impact it’s security and sovereignty.
Specifically the question had been asked what kind of a education system, from basic education to higher education were required to mitigate the emerging threats and take advantage of the emerging opportunities. The mix of knowledgeable discussants – Former Ambassador Dinesh Bhattarai, Retired General Rookmangath Katwal and Management Consultant Sumana Shrestha – and engaged participants – mostly editors and senior reports from newspapers – resulted in a pretty broad and stimulating discussion.
